Pergola

A pergola is a freestanding or wall-mounted outdoor structure used to create shaded seating areas, walkways or garden zones. It typically consists of four posts with a roof made from louvered slats or a retractable canopy. Pergolas are ideal for adding shade, privacy and structure to patios, terraces and gardens. They can be left open for an airy feel or paired with accessories such as side panels, blinds or slat walls.

Thanks to pre-assembled components and smart connection systems, most pergolas can be built in a few hours using basic tools and a second pair of hands. For best results, prepare a stable, level surface such as paving slabs, a concrete base or decking before installation.

Most pergolas do not require planning permission in Ireland, as long as they qualify as exempted development.

According to general Irish guidelines:

• The structure should not exceed 25 square metres.
• The height should not normally exceed 3 metres for a flat roof.
• It must be located behind the front wall of the house.
• It should not reduce private open space to less than 25 square metres.
• It must not be used for habitation.

Our pergolas fall within typical exempted height and size limits. However, rules can vary by local authority and specific site conditions. If you are unsure, contact your local planning office for clarification.

A pergola typically has an open structure with a louvered or retractable roof that lets you control light, shade and ventilation. It is ideal for modern outdoor living spaces. A gazebo, on the other hand, has a fixed solid roof that provides full overhead coverage, often making it more enclosed. Gazebos are better for complete shelter and year-round weather protection. Pergolas offer more flexibility and an open, airy look.

Our metal pergolas are low-maintenance. To keep yours in excellent condition:

• Clean the frame and roof slats with mild soap and water a few times a year.
• Avoid abrasive cleaners or pressure washers.
• Remove dust, pollen or bird droppings with a soft cloth.
• Check moving parts, such as the louver mechanism or retractable canopy, to ensure smooth operation.

No sanding, sealing or repainting is required.

Most pergolas range from 2.2 to 2.5 metres in height, which provides comfortable clearance for walking, dining and airflow. Our models are designed within these standard limits so they fit seamlessly into most Irish gardens and comply with common exempted-development height guidelines.
